...and then he turned into my neighborhood a mile further along. I’m 90% sure this guy lives a few blocks down the street from me based on a NextDoor profile picture. I have no idea if he was just playing with the gun, trying to hide the gun, trying to be hard, or pissed at me for taking a picture of his car at the previous red light. Not sure if I should

1. Just assume this is a weird isolated thing and ignore it.

2. Report this to the sheriff’s office.

3. Move.

I’m pretty sure I’m going with 1 unless I see this guy do something crazy again. I’ve never called the cops to report a driver doing something crazy in my 16 years of driving - and I’ve seen people doing so stupid and aggressive stuff, but a guy in a car with no tags waving a gun around in traffic is pretty close to the tipping point. Moving really isn’t practical right now. Maybe I should just send him flowers?

option 2. I don’t do it frequently, but I have called in dangerous drivers every now and then. Mostly people driving at night with no headlights. That’s so far beyond dangerous its absurd.

He looked right at me. Gun was in my direction but he wasn't looking through the sight. It was more like flashing it. The barrel was also pointed right at the Mazda6 in the next lane while he was messing with it. At the red light he leaned over into the passenger seat and disappeared then I saw the barrel of the gun pop up and then he popped back up holding it and looked right at me out the back window.

I would report it, this is back in the civilized USA. As a Marine I would be tempted to go to his house and shove my shotgun in his face, or duct tape him to his mailbox. But better to let them look into it.

Reason I ask is that reporting this to the cops could put you on this guy’s radar. Brandishing a rifle is bad enough but in a car with no tags that’s reckless as hell.

Fair enough. Hard to say if it was technically an assault rifle. All I could tell is it was a carbine with a muzzle brake and a Picatinny rail that had a flip down bipod on it. At that point I was in total nope mode and let him get about 100 yards ahead before I stepped off of my clutch.

Yeah exactly. If he kept going I’d have been more inclined to report it but in my neighborhood I’d rather not start anything. If it is the guy I think it is he’s already a pot-stirrer. I don't want to be on his radar.

I would not let someone who is being reckless with a gun in traffic slide. The fact that it is in a GTR with no plates just adds to the concern. I could almost guarantee the car is stolen. You mentioned in another comment that this guy has been a known issue for some time. I would report it to your local police and let them handle it.

Lucky! We don’t have cameras issuing tickets, but there are tons of cameras that just sit there and watch. You can go onto the city/county websites and watch them. Also google street view is rolling around and don’t forget all the new luxury cars (and even Subarus) with camera-based collision avoidance and driver-assist... Never mind all the dash cams.

There’s one set of cameras on my work commute, but it’s not in the city I live in and it doesn’t issue tickets. The only ticket-issuing cameras are in the next city over. Probably some in Richmond too, but that’s far enough away to not be totally local.
